They are on all the blocks we have here, BMW or not. When in the factory they need a convenient place to hold/carry/locate the blocks for machining after the casting process. They are reinforced since they may be carrying the weight of an assembled engine. -

Running without that may lead to an excess of poseurism...Dirt and grime

They are on almost all engine blocks, regardless of make. It's a locating/positioning hole for machining processes.Leave a comment:

Thank you, it worries me that it leads practically directly to the clutch disc area, I would imagined a breather vent at least.Leave a comment:

Dirt and grime that is supposed to collect over 20 years. Nothing "goes" there, but I have used that hole to attach my chains when I needed to lift the block.Leave a comment:

M20B25 Rear of motor, exhaust side. Already tried realoem and it's not exact as it may seem. Also I can't seem to find anything there that visually shows this side of the motor.
For reference here it is on realoem (The picture references approximately where the number 30 is on the realoem drawing): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=11_0119
Finger Points to it:
