    Reputable Aftermarket ICV?

    Hi friends,

I've been looking around for something reputable in the department of an ICV. I've purchased the eBay one for 30$ and it is tolerable, but I know it's out of spec when i measure resistance. It's probably why it was 30 dollars.

I am having a hard time finding anything I can trust. If I buy one from a company like ECS or whatever, it's gonna be 250 or more and is on back order.

I'd like to discuss everyone's experience with purchasing after market ICVs for the M20 (mine is the L-shaped version).

    Thank you!

The cheapo chinese ICV are not worth the time. Tried a couple of them in the hopes they would work. Regardless of the supplier, there are only two manufacturers. BMW and China (and the subsequent host of companies who put their own name on it).

Unfortunately the only option is a good used one. New ones are on permanent-b/o from BMW.

They used the bosch ICV on loads of engines back in the day. I got a replacement off a hyundai something at the wreckers. It was modern enough (mid to late 90s?) that there's a good chance a second hand one will be in working order.

^thats interesting. I would not have thought to look on a Japanese car. most Hyundai's from that era here in the USA had pretty serious engine problems and were probably long ago scrapped out.

            something like this,

Some of the suggested links appear to be Kia too. The one i got has the bosch sticker and part number. I guess its genuine bosch, uses a bosch 3 pin plug etc.

Either way icv not the most complicated thing around. Just 2 solenoids (for a 3 wire), open and close. I would think as long as the solenoids are not locked up from excessive carbon then i'm not sure what can go wrong with it.

Admittedly i only used my hyundai one on an aftermarket haltech ecu not a bmw ecu, but i see no reason why it wouldn't work with bmw ecu. Just 12v PWM control afterall.

on my eta i just put a washer between the elbow and the icv to constrict the opening and ran my car that way it passed smog and no idle issues.

Any small manually adjustable valve (or restrictor plate in your case) will work, however the engine won't be able to adjust for varying engine loads, such as when the AC clutch is engaged. I do not know if this would be a problem however.

My M20 runs L-Jet at the moment, so no electronic idle control at all. I removed all the mechanical idle up stuff on it as the slide valve refused to work properly. I set the idle using the built in valve on the L-jet manifold. Surprisingly it does not seem to care about AC or power steering even when its stone cold. Just idles away nicely at ~900rpm regardless of what the AC and power steering is doing.

Exactly mine didn't flinch at all I'm sure it matters a bit but most of our cars have a little room these days compared to factory new.
