    M20 no spark, DME pin 1 not an open circuit to ground

    Hello, I swapped my 84 325e to Motronic 1.3 with new head, injectors, harness from a late model car, and 153 ECU from an 87. Also modified the harness by shortening the wires (cut, crimp) for the diagnostic plug to install it into the M3 wire harness cover.
    Been struggling with a no spark condition, followed the troubleshooting list that's been posted by jlevie. Verified fuel pump, injectors work. Main relay clicks over. Everything checks out except for "Also verify that from DME pin 1 to ground is an open circuit." I have continuity to ground instead. How would I go about resolving this? I read a pinout for the diagnostic plug wires that I shortened and found that the big black wire to pin 1 is for the ignition coil, does this also lead to DME 1? I remember it had a a shielding core around it and was a pain to reconnect, is it possible that I'm somehow grounding out the pin there?

    Update: coil negative was shorted because of solder, cleared solder and car starts.

      Hi, I'm experiencing a short to ground on dme pin1 also. Can you explain how you managed to find the short in your coil? What is the solder you refer to?

        Sorry for the late reply:

        My issue was that I modified a 325i harness to fit in a 318is harness cover, I chose to relocate the diagnostic plug to the firewall to make it look fully legit, but I had to shorten the wiring for the diagnostic plug like 2 feet to fit it in the cover. There is a connection to DME 1 in the diagnostic plug, which is a shielded wire with the shielding connected to ground. I cut and re-spliced the wiring using solder splices, so the solder ended up bridging the actual wire to ground. I just cut the wire to fix it since I don't know why I need a connection to the ignition coil in that plug. If I want to reconnect the wire in the future I will cut away some of the shielding around the splice and insulate it better before reattaching the wire.
