    Car feels like its running on 5 cylinders

    Ok i have an 88325is just put in a new fuel pump(from dealer) new fuel filter new fpr and some ngk copper plugs. (it was acting up this is what I've replaced since)

    The car will run fine then the check engine light comes on and it will barely idle. It feels like a v8 with a cam in it rocking side to side, lol, but really it feels like its running on 5 cylinders.

    I put some mustang 5.0 injectors in it last summer and it ran fine and have had a jim conforti chip in it for 4 years now.

    Things I haven't replaced since I bought the car in 2001: cap and rotor plug wires or any sensors.

    any suggestion are appreciated.

    Is the oil cap on, or good?? I know it sounds stupid, but it is a closed system, and if that is not sealing well it could cause that.
    I know I am a noob (or is that a boob?) but I once ""JUST ONCE"" accidentally left the cap off after adding a quart, and my car did that. I felt like an idiot after sweating it for a while.

        If i took it to get hooked up to a diagnostic check, would that more than likely find my problem? I always thought that 80's diagnostic technology was poo.

          Well I took it to a my bmw tech friend, he didt have his diagnostic software on him but we found out that 3 of the injectors arent clicking. he said it was more than likely a bad AFM so I'm gonna take it to him when he gets his kit back.

          I unhooked the AFM with the car running crappy like it is and it made no difference. So its probably shot.

            when you're reading the symptoms, is it at idle?

            the AFM doesn't affect your idle at all. Anyone can unplug their perfectly running E30's AFM and it won't make any difference until you try blipping the throttle.

              yeah it was at idle when I unhooked it. I wasnt aware that it didnt affect it until you hit the throttle, either way 3 injectors are functioning and the car runs terrible.

              I'm gonna search the forums on how to clean the AFM.

                hmmm did the ohms test at terminls 7-8 like in the bently and its reading 1900 ohms not the 2200-2600. It does increase when as you open the butterly though.

                The three injectors that arent working are every other injector. starting at the firewall.

                troubleshooting sucks.

                    So the engine will run fine some of the time and then start missing? Does it co-relate with engine temp, or anything?

                      It used to run fine then start missing then go back to fine. It just kept getting worse. Now its just full out missing all the time.

                        Try pulling the fuel pump relay, cleaning the metal ends with carb/brake cleaner, then reinstalling. My eta ran on sometimes 4, 5 or all 6 cylinders, ran rich and wouldn't idle for weeks--AFM, ECU, cap, rotor, coil, wires, FPR were all fine. After a friend pulled the fuel pump relay and cleaned it, car ran fine!

                            Well I wire tested it. Jumpered 2 and 36 and ground #16, 1-3-5 injectors clicked then ground # 17 and 2-4-6 injectors didnt click. So they arent getting power. Where does the power wire come from that goes to the injectors 2-4-6? the bently isnt to descriptive on this.

                              Ok I fixed it. Its was that the 2-4-6 injectors werent getting a ground. Theres a cannon plug just below the throttlebody and the brown/yellow wire was disconnected. I hardwired it and it runs like new.
