    strange noise, super rough idle

I have a very strange noise coming from the front of the m20 on the new cabby. It's a loud hissing noise, like a really bad vacuum leak. Only problem is it's right at the front of the engine by the FPR and thermo housing and there are no vac lines there. It doesn't seem to change when I unplug the vac line from the FPR, and I replaced the FPR and it's still there. I don't know if it has anything to do with the crazy rough idle, but I'm lost on that too. I've done a complete tune-up, and the engine runs great at speed and under throttle. But the idle is terrible, shakes the whole car really bad and is even worse after running at higher rpm's (like when stopped at an off-ramp). Any help is appreciated.

A propane torch (not lit) is great for finding vacuum leaks. Just turn on the gas and waive it around the area the you think there is a leak. Watch/listen for a change in rpm.

I think you meant to type "hiSSing" in the first sentence, Darin ;)

Darin - Since you forgot to bring chips to the meet, I sabotaged your car. Good luck finding what I did! :D

The sound may be coming from a different part of the motor than where you are actually hearing it. I do have a nozzle for a propane torch if you want to try that. I'm busy sunday but should be around all day on saturday. (Ken's coming over to change his front wheel bearing in the am)

I have a wedding to attend, so I'm not sure if I will be around. i will try the propane idea though, I know I have a torch around somehwere. I suppose starting fluid would work very well too.

                  Tried the starting fluid:

sprayed it at the noise behind the thermostat housing. idle went up, then back down.

lucky thing I have a spare intake mani gasket, I will replace it tonight.
