oil seal for cam shaft & crankshaft

I'm in the process of changing my timing belt...I can only work on it a few hours a day, and I'm taking my time with it as I've never done a timing belt before.

I got to remove the belt and tensioner pulley today, and noticed a little oil on lower protector for the timing belt gear thats mounted on the crankshaft. Now...the ENTIRE engine is pretty dirty...it seems the previous owner did not really clean it, nor did the shop that services this car, so I have to go to town with some degreaser before I go any further. My questions are these:

    1. There are 3 gears the timing belt rolls on...the cam gear, the crankshaft gear, and another one just above the crankshaft gear the Bentley manual refers to as the balancer shaft gear??

    2. Is there an oil seal behind that balancer shaft gear??

    3. How complicated is it to replace the crankshaft seal?

    Thanks

That other gear is the Oil pump drive gear (intermediate shaft). You have to tear off the front bolt on the engine (VERY HARD TO REMOVE), use a puller to remove the timing belt drive and then pull off the front main seal cover.

I am trying to eliminate the oil pump drive gear seal and the cam shaft seal first before I consider the crankshaft seal.

The procedure you describe above is only for the crankshaft seal, right? It seems like the gear for the oil pump drive gear is just held in with a bolt in the center.

I think the crankshaft seal may be out of my league... :(

The front main seal and intermediate shaft seal are both pressed into 1 removable plate. That plate has to be removed (or you can use a sharp punch and a drywall screw with pliers but then you risk scratching the crank). The crank bolt is super easy to remove. You need to put a 1/2" drive ratchet and socket on it and rest it on the frame rail. Then you just bump the starter. It works great if you don't have the resources to take it off otherwise. You will be done before you know it.

If I place install that geared wheel on the end of the crankshaft (so as to hold it on its timing mark) and use an impact gun...would that do it?

this does NOT work. at least it didn't for me. all you will do is dent your frame rails..

I had to take that front cover off because I had the wrong intermediate shaft in my motor (ix vs i, who knew). I used a pipe wrench to hold the crank (on the hub where the balancer bolts to), that got the bolt off fine. Oh, I managed to get that all apart, swap the intermediate shaft, and put everything back together with the car running in less than 2 hours. I was pretty tired of working on it at that point so I was determined to get it done. :p

              thanks for the help nando...
i'm stuck working on the car bit by bit during the week. I also like to take my time...it's a second car and I like tinkering.

PS: the pipe wrench didn't damage anything?

                Ok....
SO the front cover plate is off, and all I am waiting on now to start the assembly of all the parts (new and existing) are the seals...for the crankshaft and the intermediate shaft as well as the gasket for that front plate.
Didn't even tear the oil pan seal pulling off that front cover...

                :pimp:
