M20 2.7 no start. No fuel or spark

Jessie cannot get his 2.7 to fire. It is a direct replacement into a 325e, so there was no conversion to be done.

There is no switched power. The car does crank, however.
There is no power to the fuel pump relay, and there is no spark.

**He also did an auto-to-manual swap at the same time** Anything under the dash that could take away switched power?

Ref sensors on the flywheel? Check hooked up right, i had them backward before anf the car wouldnt even crank [i know his cranks but may still be the issue] Missing pins on flywheel will cause this too.

but that shouldnt have anything to do with the fuel pump??

Actually yes. The fuel pump is controlled by the DME and it won't run if the DME doesn't have power or doesn't see timing reference data from a rotating engine.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Isn't there power to the fuel pump as soon as you turn the key to the "on" position?

Nope, at least not on a 325i/is/e

No fuel issue was traced to a faulty OBC relay.

                Still no sparky

My 86 had fuel but no spark. The PO had the reference sensors reversed and the wrong main relay installed. Fix and replaced the issues and it started right up after sitting for 4 years. With the 5spd swap did he use the proper flywheel? Make sure the reference sensor pin is still there. Good luck.

Wrong. Pump will fire for about 2 seconds, shut down, and fire up again after cranking.

Joe, did you check the fusible link in the trunk?

Won't the fusible link cause a no spark, no fuel situation since the DME won't get any power? You might want to check the coil as well. It's a long shot, but easy enough to check.

ignition switch....check it, thats what happened to me. No spark or fuel, both cut off because my ignition switch was a little corroded with two disconnected wires, replaced it and car started fine again, no problems since. Only thing is watch out for the clips, they break very easily and the switch will fall off again.

                            k.

the no fuel was due to a bad OBC relay... never figured out the no spark, so we took the motor back out and put in a 2.5. Car runs and drives now, sigh.
