Alright guys, this is what a eta bottom end and i head gets you.

Ok I'm posting this for the eta guys that ask about going stroker and what keeping their eta bottom end will get them interms of power. I've seen many posts from guys saying going eta bottom end with i head will not net much of a gain as the compression ratio is too low. Most guy say use super eta pistons etc, which I agree with, but for those guys on a budget that don't want to tear apart their bottom end and just slap on a i head, the car is still pretty quick and very fun and is in a similar category as a stock i.

Ok I dynoed my car at Tagracecraft about a week ago and it put down 138 and 143 torque.

    Here is the plot

As you can see there is distortion in the plot, I mostly fixed that issue by changing my plug wires yesterday. At WOT it's smooth now.

Ok this may not seem like much, but compared to my car stock it would destroy it. Also the numbers are similar to a 325i but with some more low end torque.

138 whp moves the car along nicely, here are a couple videos I made today. (On private property )

    First 0-135km/h

    90-150km/h

(Also on our private airport runway )

Here is a video of my engine bay

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVh4pEkdr7M

I have a 2 and 1/4" exhaust and cone filter, otherwise no other bolt ons. It's running on Megasquirt 2 V3 with EDIS-6 for ignition. Oh yeah and 3.73 LSD.

I built this for turbo, I've lined up all my parts and will be installing them this winter, it's actually a 524td crank and eta rods and pistons but the 524td crank is basically a eta crank but forged. Time to add 200 WHP to this plot for next year :)

I wanted to break this motor in n/a and it was a great daily driver like this.

BTW here is a video of my old car, was a Mercury Mystique that I slapped a 3L into, made a great sleeper.

Mercury Mystique with a 3.0L swapped in, 201.1 WHP and over 190 WTQ at about 2000 RPM all motor.http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t81/Aveman/Dyno.jpg Dyno Plot

Thanks for all the info on this. I've been wanting to do the head swap off of a 323i. But if i can't find one i may just go with the i head. But i want to know why most people call this a budget stroker? All it is, is a head swap. The stroke is not changed.

Hey if you do a head swap off a 323i it's a whole different story, your compression ratio will not drop as that head is designed to work with eta pistons. I beleive the term came from guys with 325i engines putting in a eta bottom therefore stroking it from 2.5 to 2.7Ls.

I'd imagine you'd put down way more power than I did with a 323i head.

        Good luck

this is basicly no gains on its own. thank you for proving everyone right.

but this IS a great start for a boosted setup!

Basicly stock 325i HP, with a smidgen more TQ.

A well maintained stock 325i will put down 139rwhp and 133rwtq on a Dynojet.

Well if someone had a 325i and just threw in a eta bottom end to run n/a they'd be a moron, but as you said great for boost. For eta guys that are sick of being passed by Dodge Caravans this is a pretty simply upgrade.

I had to run my car n/a for a while and expected it to be slow as fuck, I was kind of surprised by how it pulled once the Megasquirt was sorted out. My buddy that had a stock 325i said it felt faster and that drove me to dyno it just to see. I'll do a compression test and post up what the numbers are if anyone is interested.

So, hey man...thanks for posting your dyno sheets. I am sure your car would run away from my poor old M20B25.

Did you ever post the story of your motor build? Did you do a full build, or is this a "Ghetto Rebuild"?(like I plan on). What have you done to your block? Did you go MLS on the headgasket (as you plan on boosting, obviously), what head bolts, valve springs, etc?

                  Thanks, man.

No I never posted anything on rebuilding the motor. Well even though it was a full rebuild I guess you could call it a "Ghetto Rebuild" lol. Cleaned the block with electrolysis, boiled the pistons clean on BBQ with a metal pale and Tide. The diesel crank was mint so didn't have to do anything there. New standard rod and main bearings, new timing belt with tensioner and water pump. Standard size rings, honed the cylinders with a stone tool. Checked the clearances against the bently manual with plastigauge. All new main and rod bolts. Got the coolant channels welded on the head and had it resurfaced. Running metric blue equivalent 12.9 grade head bolts torqued to 80 ft-lbs with a stock head gasket. Cost me over $500 CAD.

Here is a picture when I just finished bolting it back together.

i'd be interested in the compression test results if you get around to it.

                        Re:

This combo really works well if you mill the head a little and run all the i parts. It makes just as much tq @ 2400 rpms as most stock i's make @ their peak. My 885 head ended up @ 38.5cc and has 180 psi cranking compression w/ 9.0:1 US ETA bottom end @ 200K miles. Best pull below 152HP / 164 TQ. Make sure the dyno you use has a properly functioning weather station.

I think I'm gonna have to do this same "ghetto rebuild." I actually have an I head that's been machined and everything sitting in my garage. Now that I know what this thing can do I am planning on getting it put on my engine soon.
