    m20 refuses to idle

well, it hasn't ran in a while. got the urge to go wrench on it a bit, runs like a dream, but no idle. it will stumble and attempt to catch itself, then just fall on its face.

last summer was the last time it ran. it had a super bad idle surge, my guess is from a vacume leak. it would stumble almost as if it were inches away from stauling, then catch itself and rev up. could a vacume leak cause it to not idle at all?

    thanks

I would suggest to go ahead and replace all of the rubber on your e30 if you plan for it to run and drive correctly for along time.

And yes a vacuumed leak is a cause of bad or dead idle.

Good call. Check all of the rubber hoses, mainly in the intake boot and vaccum lines for cracks or breaks.

Also, check your ICV, sounds like it could be a bad one to me.

Eta uses a differant connector. Remove and clean it, check the hoses, try checking the O2 sensor by disconnecting the plug to see if it changes the symptoms at all after checking the other issues.

Oh is it leaking oil? Is the valve cover loose? That will give you idle issue due to vacum loss. The Intake to Valve cover hose loose?

You could have used electrical tape on your intake boot.
