    88 Super ETA chip?

    Hi guys, I am new on here. Have a few Q's about the new whip....
    (I searched first! no info.)

    It makes sense that a Motronic 1.1 325is performance chip would work on the 88 Super ETA correct? I know the rev limiter should not be utilized due to the stroke and valve springs.

    Are there programmers that will adjust the R3V limit to suit your needs?

    btw- I guess I have a pretty rare beast?

    Your best hp/$ increase would be to bolt a m20b25 head, intake, fuel system, wiring, ECU, (basically everything) to your block. You can find this stuff, used, fairly cheap.

    Super ETA's aren't necessarily rare, but aren't as common as other models.

    You are correct, you don't want to go over 5300 rpm's with stock eta valvetrain parts - mainly the single valve springs vs. the dual of the b25.

      ....but....
      I already have the "i" head, intake, fuel system, wiring, 6k rpm tach, etc. it is a "Super -ETA" The only thing I have to upgrade is the cam and valve springs.

      I was just wondering if anyone had experience installing a chip in the ecu on the 88 325e.:up:

        Well, I have a supereta engine and a normal m20b25 sitting in my garage, and last time I checked the supereta used none of the intake parts that the m20b25 did...

        The intake manifold ports are the same size but the actual runners and throttle body are 325e sized.

        I mentioned the head because if you have to pull the head to swap springs and a cam, maybe it would be better to just put a low mileage b25 head on...

        buuuut.... you were just asking about a chip, and I don't have experience with that, so I'll shut up now

          JGood may be right concerning what you should swap out. You're correct about the cam and valve springs on the '88 E motor, but depending when in the production run yours was made, you may or may not need to drill extra oil journals in the head casting; some '88 E's have all 7 journals, some don't. You need all 7 with the I cam and turning 6500+.

          What you're after is the cam/springs, 325i intake manifold/t-body and 325i motronic.

          IF you have a head that requires drilling extra oil journals, it MIGHT be easier for you to just slap on a 325i head/intake mani, etc.

            chipping a 1989 325i is easy and i dont think it will be that much different for an eta. just make sure you have no static in your body

              Does this look like the Standard 325E intake manifold? or the I? from my limited knowledge it is the same. maybe the throttlebody is slightly smaller? Anyone know where the exact measurements are to compare the models? I also should be able to plug in an "I" ecu, correct?

                There are 3 intake manifolds for the U.S. M20's.
                1. 325i '87-'91. It has large fat runners and is necessary if you want to make any power out of an M20.
                2. 325e '84-'87. It has skinny runners that make good torque
                3. 325e '88. It has even skinner runners than the earlier E motor to keep the power choked around 120-125 since it has the 325i big-port head casting.

                The 325i has a 60mm throttle body, 325e's have a 50mm.

                  Yes, the 88 was a 1 year only build on the SuperETA. No, there is no chip for it's dme. Some people have successfully just plugged in a 325i dme however. Not sure what one specifically.

                  I just pulled mine and went 24v.
