If you go FI the sky's the limit.
If you go NA a reasonable streetable limit is around 210.
Some "race prepped" m20's have put down more but nothing close to 300 to the wheels, AFAIK.
You're friend's a ricer.

My bad, blind assumption.
MM's "HiFlo" rally engine, for $9k, nabs 240 at the crank.
If you browse around you'll find some m20's with ITB's and massive cams putting down quite a bit NA but not too many; I've yet to see such a build put down 300, let alone 300 to the wheels. It's just not worth building out that engine because it's old, 12 valve sohc, and more funding and support went into other engines.
There are lots of turbo builds with more than 300 HP. Though that's completely different. Did this ricer mean 300 at the wheels without induction aids?

Sure?
If you look hard, it's easy enough. There are people around ditching them for newer engines so their comparably cheap. they're not the best if you're looking for NA power as they're not the fondest of spinning like other 4 bangers around (s14, b16, s42... >_>) Their high compression ratio and lack of knock sensors makes them last resorts for FI builds as well.
If you're looking for high horse power m42's aren't the way to go.

I am also interested in the max NA output of the M20 engine. I decided to give it a go. Hopefully it will be finished this year June / July.
Here is a pic of a mock install for fitment.
Provided there are no clearance issues with the Metric Mechanic pistons, the engine will feature a 304 deg Schrick camshaft. Some other specs : 7,500 rpm limit, billet rocker arms, Autronic standalone engine management, JB Racing lightweight aluminium flywheel, 3.1 stroker.Comment

I don't care if it's expensive and inefficient, that's frigg'n badass
what CR and crank did you choose? the 10:1 MM pistons are non interference, but I bet that schrick would like the 11:1 pistons better..Comment

A built up and boosted M20 can easily do 400+.
I usually don't listen to what "kids" tell me.Comment

nando, I have the MM 3200 Rally, 86mm Forged Alusil pistons ( compression ratio 11:1 ) together with their H Beam, 138mm long conrods.
The crank I purchased locally at my BMW dealer to avoid shipping expenses and potential damage. I bought a E46 330i crank - 89.6mm stroke.
Here is a picture of my custom, floating brake disc setup. 330mm * 28mm discs with 4 piston AP Racing calipers.
