Sooo ive got a good running m20 with 260k on it. What do I have to worry about. How can I check it or tune it up in order to handle some mods? Would compression and lekdown test be the only thing i should check? Timing belt or timing chain? Should I replace the waterpump, tstat, plugs, any gaskets etc etc?

timing belt. I do all of the above maintenance if it hasn't been done in awhile. m20s are bulletproof with regular maintenance. What mods are you planning? that would give some idea of what you would need to do. -
dont laugh. I have the turbo kit off a 524td that I want to slap on there.
I work part time at a shop, so if compression and leakdown are in line I'll consider bolting it on. I need to figure out a way to tune the car without getting megasquirt or paying a ton for a tune. I'm also considering a carbon fiber reinforced timing belt. With a new waterpump, some heavy oil and some good plugs, I hope a low boost setup will give me some gains. Any ideas on whether i'd have to do any heavy tuning, or should I just get an FMU?Last edited by 94530inh; 02-15-2008, 07:13 PM.65k 325i Automatic

you should post in the forced induction section. Lots of knowledge there and tons more info.Comment

you don't want to put a 524 TD turbo on your car.. not unless you like low power and lots of turbo lag. and from your post, you need to do a LOT more reading about turbos - I'd suggest posting some questions on e30tech :pComment

Nonsense. My 524td was alright. You can't expect much from it, but match it with a small T3/T4 and you'll have quick spool and the gains will still be much higher than your bolt ons.
How the car is tuned is crucial though. :)Erick Mahle | FullOpp Drift | YouTube

yeah, but for all the work involved.. I would just do it right the first time, instead of twice. ;) that includes not using things like an FMU! (which the OP mentioned) but you know that as well as I do.
me, I dream of a split pulse manifold and a schwitzer turbo... :DComment
