    questions about idle

    hey all,

I have not been a bmw owner for very long but I love it. I noticed recently that my car was ideling a little high. It usually idles at about 800 rpms. the idle has dropped a little and the 'check engine' light will come one. give a few rpms and the light goes out. The light has only come on 3 or 4 times. The most recent change has been a idle of about 1000 rpms. I know this is not normal and I have read a few posts here on the forum but I didn't see anything just like this.

I appreciate any information, suggestions, and ideas.

    Thanks very much.

what does the check code say? there's a fairly simple test you can run to get the check codes using the brake pedal. go look it up and come back to us with the code, then maybe we'll have a clue. :p

I have never ran that test before. Is there somewhere that I can find the steps on how to run that check?

Also just a suggestion. look at your ecu. it's located in the glove compartment. if the part number ends in 153, that could be part of your problem. That particular ecu has been known to have idle issues. If you do have that ecu then try to find one that end it 173. It's very stable and has much better idle control.

That is very cool.. Now my car is a 1987 so I don't think it will work for me will it? I will take a look in the glove compartment and see if I can find that ecu. With my car being a 1987, will the ecu still be in the glove compartment?

All E30s have the ECU in the glove compartment.

yes it should work for an 87, being an 87 you have a better chance at having the 153 ecu. I just got my megasquirt up and runing and I have a 173 ecu with a 91 octane chip in it that might be for sale real soon. I also still have the stock chip that I could reinstall.

Ok.. I pulled my ecu today. Check engine light is coming on more often. Anyway it was easy enough to get to. Here is the info I can get off of it:

                  1730576 001 810

                  *1517000281*
                  bosh
                  0 261 200 380

                  1713242

I also found in my BMW manual that there is a test I can do. Turn the key on but don't start the car. the check engine light will come on and if there is a problem start flashing. Trouble is that when I do this it does not flash.. Just stays on like normal. My check engine light usually comes on when I am sitting at a light or what ever and the car is idleing.

even went to Autozone and Orilleys and they could not run a check engine test. Bummer.

                  So what is next?

                  Thanks

The 173 ecu is the one with idle problems, and it was replaced with the 380 ecu. Yours must have already been replaced at some point, because the 380 ecu was produced from sept 88 on, so the car would be an 88 model.

Try the stomp test, it may work due to the later model ecu.

Actually the 153 was the one with the idle problems I have never had any issues with the 173 ecu's to date, always the 153's unless they had been reconditioned by someone (programma)

I will try the stomp test today when I get home. Any other suggestions? The problem only seems to be when at a idle. The rest of the time the car runs sweet!

                          Update.

I cleaned the ICV sensor thing and also cleaned the first sensor after the air filter. So in short I gently cleaned the air filter, the sensor after that and the sensor after that. The next item in the intake is the part the throttle cable attaches to.

I have done some reading and I suspect that the ICV sensor is the problem. Is there a way to check it with out replacing it, or should I just start replacing sensors?

Your help with this is greatly appreciated.
