Car has a problem warming up

I have a 1989 325i and the engine runs fine when its warm but for some reason it hates turning on. When i turn on the car when its cold i have to pump the gas and get it to 1500 rpms other wise it will die. While holding it at 1500 rpms it does this weird puttering thing for about 10 seconds then its fine and i can let go of the gas and let it warm up. What is this all about?

In a case like this, the first ting I'd think of would be an intake leak, followed by a bad engine temp sensor.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

oh. well its not the intake i just replaced that. But if it was a bad sensor wouldnt it not tell me if it was warm or not? or does it mean its going out

I acutally have the same problem. Here are the symptoms.

Start the car and the revs fluctuate from idle down to near stall, and then it jumps up to 1300 rpms or so and then back down to a near stall.

It does this for a few minutes until it warms up.

However, i don't let it do this. I also just hold the revs at 1500 until i feel its warmed up enough and then its fine.

        Interested in any help.

New to bimmers so?? Vacuum lines? IACV? Carbon build up somewhere?

          Same problem here.....so frustrating.

I have to crank forever to get it to get to that point too.

          I've replaced/done:
fuel pump, spark plugs, cap and rotor, allllll vaccuum hoses. sprayed to test for leaks., tested spark plug wires for resistance (all ok), no fuel smell coming from injector area/fuel rail

next up is a fuel filter (which is less than a year old, but its cheap) and then...i have no idea... :(

there are tests for all of these sorts of questions in the bentley manual. I suggest you buy one and go through each step until you solve your problem.

Will do. Thought maybe there might be one certain thing that's common with these M20's. I'll go through the troubleshooting.

                Thanks
