Chip is nice, but at the expense of having to buy super unleaded all the time. I just removed my JC chip this past weekend because I do A LOT of driving - go through more than a tank each week. In Cali, super unleaded is commanding over $4/gal. now.....not cool.
Back on topic....
Short shift kit is definately a nice upgrade - something you'll appreciate with every gear change.
Lighter flywheel is nice as well, but wait until you need to replace the clutch for this one....its rather involved.
The M20 is a motor that really doesn't respond well to simple bolt-on tricks. If you want more noticable power gains, get ready to throw some serious cash at it. Leave it stock (with exception to the suggestions mentioned) and enjoy it. You're better off tweaking the suspension instead.

Got a 12lb-13lber on my car, and it never affected idle at all.
I bought the Metric Mechanic stocker shaved down for $250 + core. I woulda just taken the IS flywheel somehwere if I did it again, but I didn't have one at the time. You could probably get a stocker shaved down for less than $100.- Sean Hayes
