    Help...I'm brain dead.

Which M20 block had the dipstick tube in the top of the pan instead of the side of the block?

(you get old and start forgetting shit)

any pre-e30 m20 should have it in the pan.

                    Correct!

I pinned it down. It was really making my head hurt there for a day or two.

By cylinder head, it will be cast 2.5 and 2.7 one over the other. I'll take a pic tomorrow.

The super ETA will have an "885" head (marked 2.5/2.7)

so far the block casting number is an enigma... I've called every one I know at BMW and they haven't a clue (probably they can't remember either)

I did figure out this particular engine though. M20B25 from a 91 e34.... Just don't see them in the shop enough anymore to have the info lurking in my head...

yes the e34 version has a steel plug blocking the dipstick hole in the block - which easy to punch out. I have a m20 from an e34 in mine.
Over here in Aus I have found the e34 M20M25 are more common and therefore more available than the e30 versions.

This one came in Frankenkar (my $50 e30) I was looking at it and had a senior moment...
