my sister car is doing the same thing right now, i swapped relays with my car and nothing, i jumped the fuel pump relay and got fuel. So what triggers the fuel pump relay? Also this only happens when its cold outside, its been happening intermittently due to recent weather and now no start at all.
also just checked, no spark....

ok, so i am still lost here. have power to the coil, no ground. where is the ground terminated at? also checked my crank sensor and at first there was about 900 ohms between 1 and 2, and shit i do not remember what it was between 1 and 3 but it was high. the connectors though are VERY brittle and a few pieces broke off while i was handling them. fuel, yes. spark, no. the haynes manuals do not show where grounds are, does the bently manual show them?

Coil grounds thru the computer. That's what tells it to fire. Replace CPS forthwith. The wires involved are power, ground, and signal, but not (necessarily) in that order. They're sensitive, and are not going to do you much good if they're not attached to anything. Remember that something that "looks" fine is at LEAST 17 years old.
As a new E30 owner, just accept the fact the the electronics in our cars are ridiculously over-complicated, and that they need to NOT be fucked with or modified, only repaired when necessary. Loose connections, corrosion, water intrusion, recalcitrant sensors, and DVM expertise are part of the experience. I kinda like the fact that I still need to whack the temp gauge in my newly-rebuilt cluster every time I start my car.
And wasn't that twice now that your wife had no problem starting it? Cars need love, too. Stop cursing it.

i haven't really cussed it, and my wife really does not like the car. . . . . . . . . and it has started for me too. . . . . . .I am just gonna keep looking. I am not trying to mod the car....as it is just a work car. its a nice clean car, but i do not plan on keeping it for too much longer. i want a 92 vert. 318 or 325. but if i do not fix it in the next few weeks, i will take it to a local shop that specializes in bmw and mb.why does it have to be a "dead end"? why not just "end"?Comment

just a thought but does it crank at all when you are doing this? if not check your battery connections. it could very well cause what you are seeing. maybe even your ground connection on your engine. its definitly electrically related.Comment

Kevin, did you download the electrical manual? You can find it a www.wedophones.com.
look for "manuals" then automotive, then BMW.
So the main relay (farthest forward of the 3 on the left strut tower) SHOULD have power on pin 30 at all times, then switch power on when the key is on to run the ECU and the fuel pump (both off of the 2 pin 87s)

i went there and looked, was gonna print it but i didn't, i didn't think my job would be too ok with me printing 125 pages. i am gonna do some more looking tonight or tomorrow night. it is pumping fuel out. just not getting spark. if it is that sensor on the drivers side of the engine block(by the flywheel) where can you get one? also where is the sensor for the cam? is there a sensor for the cam? thanks

Kevin, there is no sensor on the cam. If it is an ETA, the crank sensors are in the bellhousing. If it is a super ETA or an i, the sensor is right in front of the harmonic balancer. The i also has a sensor on a spark plug wire, but it is only a reference sensor, and will run without it.
