    Random engine 'hiccups'

[first post] I purchased a 89, 325i 5 speed a couple weeks ago, so far i love the car, but it just started giving me a bit of trouble. Driving down the road, constant speed, no throttle changes, the CEL light will flash very randomly, and sometimes the engine will just die. usually for 3-6 seconds, the engine will loose power, it feels like spark is cutting because it will happen very suddenly, the CEL light will come on and headlights and interrior lights will all still be on while the engine is off, and while the car is in gear coasting the engine tach will fall to 0, i dont know how these cars get their tach signal, but it leads me to believe ignition.

ive searched and read back probally 15 pages in the m20 forum, but cant find an awnser, but from what ive found im leaning twards the crank position sensor.

yup. CPS is your #1 suspect. See my thread "cold running issue" near the bottom of this section.

Check it with an ohm meter. bently manual says 540 ohms +/- 54, iirc.

just drove the car up the road, new symptom, the car surges a little bit under constant throttle.

CarsSuck: where is the CPS on the 325i? ive read that on E's its on the tranny bellhousing, and on the front cover, and on the I there is just one on the front cover, is this correct?

It is on the front of the engine on the pass side below the oil filter but up by the crank pully

Read your spark plugs. Is it running rich? Normal? Lean?
