Coolant expansion tank hoses

I have a euro E30 323i Baur with an M20B23 engine. There are two 7mm hoses coming off the coolant overflow tank. One goes to the top of the radiator for coolant over flow. Does the other hose simply vent to atmosphere or is it supposed to be connected somewhere? I am referring to the hose being pointed to in the attached photo.

Just aim it somewhere down and away from everything. It's an overflow expansion hose.
