I install the gasket dry. I am sure there are other opinions.

I'm going to have to do the gasket soon and the Haynes manual says "tight but not too tight"...

Do you all recommend RTVing the valve cover gasket, as I think that's what the Haynes manual says, but most cars you just install it dry...
1-Install gasket dry. 2-Get the Bentley manual--much better than Haynes. Best money you can spend on your E30.

Holy crap--those 535i nuts are $38.75 for 8. I'm going to try the S14 chrome nuts (8 for $22.00) and use a flat and lock washer to make them the right depth.

because the reason there are studs not bolts to hold the valve cover down is that studs are easily replaceable is stripped

If you strip out the Alloy head taking your hardened bolts in and out, you will have to put in a time-sert or helicoil, further damaging the head.

If you strip a stud, you just pull it and replace it, no damage to the block

Yes they aren't cheap, special app hardware never is. What ever you do don't bottom out on the studs it will break shit.

True, studs are the best thing for it.

              I agree with this post...mostly.

First off, there are tons of cars with valve cover bolts, so it is nothing new, alloy head or not.

I do stupid shit to my car because I like it, so if using helicoils to "fix" the threads is the answer, I would just do all of them. Allens would look cool!

Helicoils are WAY tougher than aluminum threads. Helicoil was invented to make better threads for spark plugs on Airplanes back in the 40's.

If you go to your local Ace hardware store, they have button head metric allens by the fucking buketfull...screw the bicycle shop. Hell, they might have Helicoils too!

              GL, guys.

The S14 acorn nuts should arrive w/my order today--I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Luke, what are "button head metric allens"? You lost me on this one. If it's an allen head how can it be a "button"?

Just a heads up, that OC-84 filter doesn't have a DB valve like the OC-49s.

and now that you had this idea, I'm going to have to think up something else.

Is that a CF heat shield above the headers? Did you just cut it from a sheet?
