With a 280 you will need to grind down the ears for the rear mounts, AND have the E30 trans brace at the furthest-most setting for it to mount. The 280 is the strongest transmission for a big-6 car, when built correctly.
The reason that most people choose the 260:
It is the most widely available trans, which allows you to pound on it as hard as you want all day long without having to worry about breaking the bank if it lets go. This is the same mind-frame as the entire M30 swap... It is inexpensive enough that you are not afraid to rail on it. (unlike valve-fragile S52's at $3000 a pop!)
It is strong enough to hold the power, easily.
It fits. With my mounts you use factory E30 shift linkage and a factory E30 driveshaft.
