    look what I found

Broke a rocker arm and finally got to pulling the head today. Parts car should be coming early this week and, depending on how long the machine shop takes, should be up and running by the end of the week. The piston is fine BTW.

ha, I'm actually surprised it didn't do any damage now that I think about it. Usually a snapped valve will destroy a motor. Maybe because it was at 1k rpm and died right away after it happened.

Cam gear bolts snapped off and let the cam freewheel. Stuck 4 valves about a quarter inch into the pistons :(

wow thats intense. I don't even know how mine happened. I'm thinking the rod was bent a little in the first place and it progressively got worse.

Got a question about the new head. How will I know where tdc is on the head if it is off the block?

Set the lobes on the cam of the #1 cylinder to (roughly) 5 and 7 o'clock. The lobes should be equally far away from touching either of the valves. There is a little pin on the cam gear as well that needs to be in the 7:30 position when you tighten it on.

I can get a pic if you have no idea what I'm trying to say (understandable ;)).

                    little update:

bought an e32 parts car only to find out that something dropped into a cylinder of that one. Luckily not every cylinder was damaged. So I decided to "rebuild" my original head. I'm not about to spend $$$ on all new parts for my original one, so I am only going to replace the damaged pieces (from the parts car head). I know I know not the best idea, but this head was rebuilt before so the components aren't too old.

Taking a head apart is a PITA. Getting the Rocker shafts out really is testing my patience. I may end up having to buy new rocker shafts because when I pound them out, the ends get trashed. I have half of the intake rocker shaft out at the moment, but I dont think i'll need to go any further as I only need one rocker/valve.

Thank goodness all this nonsense is happening before it's driving. I am learning so much from this build, but I am ready for it to be done.
