    M62 Swap

    Hey guys,

I have an opportunity to pick up a complete M62 w/6spd and wiring from a '97 540, but want to know a little more about what would be involved. obv i'd need custom mounts, radiator, brake booster, driveshaft, tranns tunnel...but can i just yank the whole unit out (engine, trans, wiring) and drop it in my E30 after mounting modifications? i've tried to read the e30.de site but i'm confused navigating it. for those of you who have done this, please let me know what quirks are involved before i get in too deep.

Yap, it's doable. Though with M62 you need to hassle with the electronics a bit more as it has EWS II so you need the key, EWS ring and EWS box from the same car where the engine came from.

Check out the showroom thread including build pictures at my signature, i guess they'll clear the swap problems in best way.

I've got probably over 1000 hours into mine so far and it's still not completely done yet. Much more involved than a 24v/m30 swap- theres a lot to be fabricated.

for real? ugh I have 'limited' time to make it happen. I know if it isn't done by semester start I won't get it done til next summer

On the other hand, I had my last m30 swap running Sunday night after pulling the m42 Friday afternoon.

                        Build thread here

Having the whole car to take parts from is a big help, but you still have to make a bunch of things.

Engine mounts can be bought for pretty cheap and the transmission mount is pretty simple to make. The hardest parts are the exhaust manifolds, the remote booster and linkage and the cooling system. I've got probably about 80 hours into the exhaust alone.

Physically, the engine fits fine. It's a bit of a pain getting it in there, but once in nothing on the car needs to be modified. It's a very large engine though, so making things fit around it gets quite complicated.

i couldn't access the build thread...

does the shifter come close to the right location with the 6spd gearbox or do the linkages need to be altered? also, i've read that the 535 radiator is best? also, what driveshaft are you using?
