There are charts which show the max cubic capacity of engines you're allowed to register in certain vehicles.

SO as an example (using all numbers I've pulled from my arse): you take your car's weight of 1300kg and times it by 4.82 for the max displacement for a non-turbo engine or by 4 for an FI engine.

This gets tricky when the vehicle you're going to put the new engine into weighs under 1100kg or came with a four-cylinder as the biggest engine available as you times the weight of the vehicle by 3.0 for NA or 2.5 for FI. Some say you go off the weight of the heaviest variant (ie: 325iS or 325e auto 4dr), others make you go off the weight on your rego papers. Clear as mud, eh?

These are the vehicle standards sheets for NSW:

This is something all modified car owners in NSW should print out and know before spending money on parts or consulting engineers - the guide to light vehicle modification.

For most modifications to cars (incl. engine swaps) you need to get the modifications signed off by an engineer who is accredited with the registration authority in each state.

Sometimes they want EPA emissions tests done (like your smog shit) and sometimes the roads department (called the RTA in this state) can't come up with a common answer on what weight to go off when choosing engine sizes or if you need emissions testing. This is why I've had such a hard time figuring out what engine to put in mine as I don't want to have to go through that headfuck (or expense) and part of the reason why my E30 has sat for over a year with nothing done to it.

Alright so yesterday afternoon I went to vicroads. I need a vass certificate and then take that to vicroads and have the car inspected. Once that's done then I'm good to go. I'm not sure how much trouble I will have. As the things that's are most concerning are the bakes and suspension and it's all been upgraded in my car. Il keeP posted on whaghappens with that.

Car is being converted from auto to manual and il pulled the pedal assembly and am putting a new assembly in. Booked in to get custom exhaust and intercooler welded in 2 weeks!! More pics to come!

Thanks Otis. Manifold is perfect got worried for a sec that it wasn't all going to fit but I didn't doubt your skills haha. Also you have no idea how many compliments I've had from exhaust and performance places about the quality of your manifold!

Any new progress on your car?

More pictures when I get a chance.

Manifold doesn't look very equal length.

                            But seriously, choice bro.
