turbo biodiesel?

has anyone seen a build thread of one of these?

im diggin the idea of building a turbo diesel and running it off biodiesel :)

Im building something kind of like that.

Taking a 325iX and swapping in a m21 turbo diesel engine. The end product will be a 324tdx, wont get the mpg as a 2wd swapped diesel, but is way cooler anyways.

The motors are out there, but look at spending at the very least 3000$ to do the swap.

You will want to find a 524td to start with. Then you need to repin the wire harness for the e30 c101 plug. Getting a euro 324td harness may work, but you have to make sure you find the right one. There are 2 versions of the e30 harness. one with the inline pump, and one with the rotary pump (e28 is rotary)

so you're tellin my the ecu in my 87 eta will work for a m21, ill just have to repin it?

and as for transmission, dont td's only come with autotragic? or will i be able to bolt my 5 speed from my eta with the same bell housing or will i have to find one that'll work?

sorry if im asking questions i could've found searching the forums or google but im also researching about biodiesel at the same time and its a good amount of info im tryin to digest.

No, the wire harness on the m21 is a square plug. E30 has a round plug. So the engine harness needs to be repinned like the m50 swap guys do it.
e30 c101 plug

This plugs into the fuse box at the round connector on the firewall.


You HAVE to use the m21 ecu, no other ecu will work.

the USA version of the 524td came only as a auto, but your in luck. the m21 shares the same transmission as the m20. So you will need to find a manual transmission from a 325e (needs to have the 2 sensors on the bellhousing.

Searching google or the forums will get you no where with this swap. No one really has done it and documented the swap. So you can follow my build on e30tech, or just ask me questions and I can tell you what needs to be done.

Both the plugs in the picture are e30 c101 plugs. I dont have a picture of the e28 one, but its just a square plug with a bunch of pins in it.

Here is the pin out swap that needs to be made to make a m21 run in a e30

m21-----------e30
Pin 1--------->Pin 1....To inst. cluster charging indicator lamp
Pin 2--------->Pin 2....To check control, static oil level sensor
Pin 3--------->Pin 13...Fuel pump control
Pin 4--------->Pin 4....To cluster, coolant temp signal
Pin 6--------->..............Not used with e30 FI (integrated idle control)
Pin 7--------->Pin 7....12V to ign coil
Pin 8--------->Pin 18...To starter, from ignition
Pin 10-------->..............Not used on non-airbag cars? (would go to pin 20?)
Pin 13-------->Pin 10...To check control, dynamic oil level sen.
Pin 14-------->Pin 5.....To cluster, oil pressure warning lamp
Pin 15-------->Pin 11...To cluster, SI reset
-------------->Pin 16...Unused

Right now my build thread is at 42 pages... so it may take some time, but in the early-mid page 30s is the turbo diesel stuff.
