I have a 1987 325i Cabby and it's looking for something to fill the hole in its heart so I was thinking of doing an engine swap. I want to be different and fabrication skills, tools, lifts, and engineering are all present and accounted for. I've seen many people put LS1 and six speeds in these, as well as a bonified cornucopia of BMW mills, but I don't want to upset the weight distribution that much. I was wondering about the GM L67 3.8L V-6 out of Bonneville SSEi's, Grand Prix GTP's Park Ave Ultra's and a few others coupled with a 5 speed from a 3.8L Camaro. This would give me forced induction as well as 240hp and 240lb/ft of torque right out of the box without mods. I had a 1999 GTP that I had pushing 350hp at the front wheels with just bolt-ons, so these have massive potential and they're around the same weight as an M20 as far as I know... And they're practically giving them away around here. Has anyone ever tried this? Does anyone have a link? Fill me in if so and thanks in advance for any help or opinions guys!

The S50 is lighter than the M20 and makes the same power as the GMV6 swap. Plus, it fits...Last edited by Fidhle007; 07-04-2011, 01:37 PM.'89 325is S50 Track Montser

Well I'm thinking of it this way, that I have two options. I could either do a turbo 2.7L setup since I already have the ETA engine and 885 head and I have access to a cheap Holsett HX35, or I could blow everyone away with originality points as well as performance for the most part, by doing the 3.8L. I was even maybe thinking of doing the turbo then selling the engine and doing the 3.8L after. OR I could turbo my '87 Cabby and 3.8L my '88 Cabby.... Hmmm....:bow:WARMSQUASH1

Dude, don't be such a dick. The way it read (to me) was that you were saying that the M20 and S50 made the same power. Plainly, I misunderstood.Last edited by Moxie; 07-04-2011, 02:02 PM. Reason: because I'm a shithead with poor working memory capacity. Or so I'm told.sigpic

You simply said the M20 and S50, didin't specify just the block, the whole engine, or everything including manifolds and fluids etc. Here it says the s50 (look at m50 since the engine labeled s50 on that site refers to the euro s50) weighs 41 pounds more than the m20... http://www.bimmerforums.com/engine_faq.php
BTW that most likely referring to either the dry weight of only the engine itself or just the bottom end.
Anyway at the very least the statement as a whole was false since you said the m20 makes more power than the s50. Regardless of what you meant, that is what the statement read.:DZinno '89 <24v swap in progress>
