Anything ever come of this? I'm an MK3 Supra fanatic that just bought an E30.. I know the 7M like the back of my hand and made 450rwhp with basic bolt ons and homework.

Anything is possible... but how much $ do you want to waste on it? The question of "Why?" prevails over the question of "Why not?".Joe Funk -- Portland Oregon

Its definitely a question of why not when doing a swap, because any engine that came with a car will get it from A to B. Why? I'm familiar with the motor - far more so than any of the BMW power plants, but I'm definitely willing to change that. Bottom line for me is the dollar per lb of fun I can have. I'm not trying to stir the pot here, because I'm not against _any_ decently powerful engine that will fit in the bay, BMW or otherwise.
Now just for kicks I'll compare prices for a turbo M30 engine/trans/ecu to the rest of the potentials.Neal Mulcahy - 84 318i

Now by what I've found so far, M30 didn't come turbo charged from the factory. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I see the M30 turbo variant labelled M102B32 (or 35). It seems like properly building, getting a turbo and figuring out the logistics of intake/exhaust/coolant/oil plumbing, it would cost more time and money than I'd be happy with I think.
I'd prefer an already-turbocharged power plant, so if there is a BMW power plant that is worth the salt, what is it?Neal Mulcahy - 84 318i

I think what Joe means is that you're going into uncharted territory. Maybe it doesn't bother you, but You Always Have Other Options.
The M30 engine he mentions gets turbo'd all the time. If you find the right block/head combination, you're starting with 8:1 compression ... this motor is overengineered, and sees 300,000 - 400,000 miles easily if maintenance is kept up.
There are 20+ members here who have swapped in an m30, and there are build threads to follow. The resources are out there.
The motor comes from larger BMW's, which have their own followings as well. Even though this isn't the most common swap, it's definitely one of the most lethal.
Compare to the 1zgts3 whatever motor. Sure, if you have the re$ource$ to pioneer your way through that swap, you might end up with as much power as the m30 swap, and your car will have a lot of character... but will you need to pull the motor to change your oil?
Here's what a stock 3.4L inline-6 M30 motor from a 5/6/7-series can do with just 14psi in your e30...

So, to clarify, I'm not looking for support on a non BMW swap, just curious as to what its outcome was. Realistically I'm a year out from a swap of any kind, financially.
So the bone stock 3.4L in that dyno chart is the M102B35, or am I confuzzled? I am definitely a fan of overengineering and 400,000 mile engines.Neal Mulcahy - 84 318i

You'll find many iterations of this engine used in many BMW's spanning over 25 years!
The M102 that you're talking about (from the 745i) is factory-turbo'd, sure, but just so you know, there many ways to tune this motor w/ aftermarket parts, and a very helpful community between this board and a couple others.
I'm swapping in an m30b34 (same motor as the thread w/ the 370hp-400tq), and all I need, aside from the donor car w/manual transmission, are motor mounts ($200-300) and an electric pusher fan ($50-$100). Oh and I need some warmer weather as well.
This forum is priceless for swap know-how and doing one's homework.

The best bang for the buck hp in an e30 would be to turbo the m20. You may not be able to get the 450hp you had in the Supra cheaply, but remember that an e30 weighs a lot less than a mk3, so less can be more.Byron

mate if you are doing a cross breeder to me the best thing to do is a nissan sylvia 200 turbo, engine is small, turbo is on the right side intake plenum too, gearbox is just about the same size and the lenght of the propeller shaft too plus the countless aftermarket parts for that engine and bulletproof engineering mske it a right choice, if you want to go extreme, there are ford escort cosworth conversions doing in europe that eat everything in their sight.

The 7mgte gets a bad wrap because of the head gasket. They decided to go with a non-asbestos head gasket for environmental? reasons but didn't change the torque specs to go with the change thus ended up with lots of blown head gaskets. My brother has a 7mgte in a 1987 Toyota 4runner (its for sale, buy it).

do a turbo 3s. hahaha. you can put out some nice hp's with that. but who the hell want's to put a jap motor in a german car. you know in some countries they burn people for even talking about that. i have seen a vtec in a e36 m3, that was sad. i have also seen a s52 in a 2nd generation rx7, but that was kinda cool.sigpic
