    M30 modification plan

    My budget is 3000$
Also I possess a 1992 535i automatic motor from my brothers part out
I have the parts needed for manual conversion
and I am more about the necessities than "while i'm in there let me do this"

    Here is what intrigued me:

“Good'n'Tight was putting down north of 500 whp/wtq with a HX40 turbo on a standard m30 B34 bottom with not much done to it other than studs and a MLS head gasket.."

Now, I was trolling among many threads I decided to compile a list to choose from.

    I. MLS head gasket (u can get thicker ones to lower CR a bit, your engine should be in the 8's already)
    ARP head stud kit
GT35 or GT40 turbo. Something similar will do. HX40 turbo?
    External wastegate of some sort
    Custom made exhaust manifold
II. Wilder or schrick camshaft with steel rockers adapted with KKK Turbo Manifold or M5 intake manifold or TCD RHD Manifold
III. After market stand alone ECU
IV. as for the Intercooler system, ill probably go with an "Air/Air"? and SQUEEZE it behind the kidneys

please dont hate me for sounding like a moron ;) just inform me instead

So you have $3000 for everything listed ? if thats the case your going to spend about half of that at least picking up then engine and rebuilding it so its ready for a turbo. At the vary least. And S38 parts cost a little more than a pretty penny. the crank alone ive seen anywhere from 600-800.

Titan..sorry let me clarify I have the motor already.I dont really feel the necessity to rebuild if its not that bad. Just a port and polish maybe.

alright just take note that the engine you have was not built to take a turbo so just be warned. Lack of proper hardware and you will destroy that engine. My brother did that to his car and destroyed the engine.

I will say good luck though man. at least have the pistons, rods, and crank checked.

Rods are very strong on m30s, pistons too, I wouldn't worry about a s38 crank. Do new main and rod bearings Arp head studs. Vac makes a turbo cam for m30s that's supposed to be good, do IE heavy duty rockers, make sure the valve springs and valve seals are good, make the motor reliable then boost the crap out it

Schinken, thanks for the input right now I am still "trolling" using the search function using the word "budget" lol my main goal is to do it cheaply and reliably.

Didn't see clutch on your list of things to buy. You will deff need a strong clutch to handle the torque.

Good & tight, your the man thanks for the inspiration. So what exactly did you really do part wise for your swap. Did you really not use that many parts?

slap the engine in with a proper clutch and turbo. Then TUNE. tune tune tune. There are plenty of stock b35s running boost reliably. I can't stress enough the importance of a tune. This is where 90% of the reliability for a turbo system comes from.

I'm sure I'll get flack for this, but don't worry about cam, bearings, head studs, etc. The b35 is a bullet proof engine. You'll make plenty of power with the stock setup. I would only change the timing chain guide rail and tensioner rail.

I fabricated everything, manifold, exhaust, intercooler piping, engine mounts..list goes on. Engine wise, stock bottom end B34, B34 head with Schrick cam, ARP's, Cometic gasket stock thickness.

And like yert315 said, tune tune and tune, it really is the most important aspect of turbo system.

its an m30 for crying out loud.studs b34 bottom end metal headgasket. and boost it. right now i am realiable as hell at this power. and yes do all seals while the motors out. spec clutches are not too bad. these motors are bad ass. and if it ever goes pop its 300$ and a little elbow grease to get another one in. lol

Thought you were running an M90 head? and thus the early style distributor?

This with a B35 head slapped on it /done.

M30 is IMO about the best engine BMW ever made. Simple, and can handle A LOT of abuse. I drove one around with a severely cracked head (between cyl 5/6 and 3/4) and blown HG. It simply didn't care, kept going.
