what is the different between a m90 block and a m30 block?

The M90 blocks came directly from the racing blocks used in the 3.0CSL and other CS race cars. They are overbored and shorter stroked than other M30s. Basically, when BMW was racing the CSLs, their director of racing asked for more bore and the engineers said "no, it won't work", but he wanted it so he made them figure it out and they did. The result was 93.355mm bore and super thin walls between cylinders. They have a forged short stroke crank (only 2mm shorter than a B34 or B35, but it's still 2mm) and 9.3:1 pistons. It's this relationship to the old racing motors that inspired the designation M90, to set them apart from the normal M30s.

They can burn head gaskets sometimes, but the performance is worth it. They still "only" made 218hp stock, but their willingness to rev is very different than other M30s... they feel much "lighter".

edit: The M90B35 was 3453cc and the M30B34 was 3430cc.

Theres just about a whole chapter on this subject in the 6 series Enthusiast's Companion if you are interested in more info.

Thanks. Sounds like one hell of an engine, and you have one in an e30! It must absolutly fly! Those blocks are hard to find, right?

It is a kick ass motor. In my 635CSi it was a lot of fun, and that was a 3300lb car, now it's in a ~2650lb car!

The blocks arent incredibly rare, but they are getting to that point. Lots of E12 and Bavaria guys use them for their projects. They only made them up to a point in 1982.

                        Mine is actually an e24 m30b35 motrontic 1.1 from a '88 635csi

I want to find out if I can just get the bottem end from a euro l block and rebuild the bottem end and slap my m30m35 head on it and have a "L" motor.

that would be veary cool euro motors had high comp so if it would work the comp might be pretty high

Wow! that's up to 12 in the US. I know peter Mchenry did four or five back in the day.

Also one in canada was fetured in Euro Car mag(with NOS)...nice

When I did my swap I only knew of 4 other cars in the US...tops.

I bet there are about 100-200 running around in germany.

Maybe 10 or 15 in south africa left?

                            Still rare...

I always wonder what a stock 335i would go for. Take a $2000 e30 - drop a m30 in it. What you going to sell it at $3000?

I´ve got just the same engine going into a Mtech II coupe a customer owns.
It´s getting a standalone and it´s now got a B35 cam (highest profile stock BMW cam) and general head refurbising,. I can´t wait to start driving the thing.

compression should be just shy of 10:1
The B35 makes 220hp with this cam, AFM and 8.8:1 compression and general conservative engine tuning
This M90 should past that easily with higher compression and no AFM along with better fuelling and timing control.
