Help with shopping list for M30 swap

    PARTS LIST

    1. E30 325i (1990)
    - Base car

    2. E34 535i (1990)
    - ECU (i'm not sure about this)
    - Engine
    - Clutch (or swap for new clutch while engine is out and fitting easy)
    - Gearbox
    - Drive shaft (only front part needed)
    - Differential
    - Upper radiator hose that goes to heater core
    - End of shift linkage (this needs to be put on the end of the E30 linkage)
    - Crossmember
    - Transmission Mounts

    3. E28 535i
    - Radiator (this rad is used because it is Thin and fits in the tight space)
    - Downpipe (possibly all the way to the CAT not sure)

    4. E30 325iX
    - Washer Resevoire

5 BATTERY RE-LOCATION KIT (if not already in the back)

    6 ENGINE MOUNTS
    - From www.e30.de or custom made.

    7 NEW PARTS
    - E30 Centre Bearing for driveshaft
    - Chain Tensioner for M30
    - Engine Paint
    - Exhaust Gaskets, nuts and sealer paste
    - Oil, Coolant, Tranny Fluid?, Diff Fluid

    8 FABRICATING
    - Shorten Shift Linkage and add E34 linkage end
    - Mate E34 downpipe with E30 standard exhaust
    - Custom work on E34 harness to match all the correct functions of the harness to the fuse box.
    - Hook up the stock e30 condensor fan wiring and fan for extra cooling.
    - Mount the E28 radiator
    - Lengthen some wires on loom so that ECU will reach its mounting points. (its about 4" short)

9 THINGS TO THINK ABOUT REPLACING WHILE ENGINE IS OUT AND CHANGING IS EASY
    - New belts
    - Gaskets (if taking parts off to paint, might want to fit new gaskets)
    - Clutch (need to buy new flywheel or re-surface old one if getting an aftermarket clutch)
    ------------------------------------------------

    MY QUESTIONS:

    1. What ECU is best to use and what changes need to be made to the wiring loom? I'm guessing the E34 ECU should be fine as it came with the engine.

    2. Have I missed anything out? or put thing os that I don't actually NEED?

You can use an E30 3.73 differential if you want. You can use an '88 325 supereta or 87' 325e driveshaft complete (no trimming or lengthening needed).
Check out this site for driveshafts. you need bigger guibo (tri-holes 3.12" apart)http://www.wholesaleimportparts.com/...7;20Driveshaft

For teh E28 radiator, you need to grind down the E30 radiator mounts that are on the front subframe area, you'll see them.

For your questions:Use the stock ECU that came with the engine. you have 2 choices for wiring

    1. Use your existing stock M20 E30 wiring harness which is motronic 1.3 and just adapt it to the M30 engine by lengthening wires because some sensors are in different locations. This is the easier approach.

    2. Use the stock M30 wiring harness, but especially if this motor came from a manual car, you will have automatic transmission and TPS wiring problems. If it's from a manual 535i, then I would do that. it should hook right up. my car came from an automatic 735i, so i just used my existing M20 wiring harness and lengthened some wires.

Some more notes: depending on the shift lever you are using (e30 or E34), you will need to shorten it in some way, shape, or form.
Use the stock E30 transmission bracket.

I also suggest using polyurethane motor AND tranny mounts. that engine will be really close to the radiator and you don't want that drivetrain moving under hard braking/acceleration.

Dont' forget to put on a ground wire to the engine! and definitely hook up an electric fan (use the stock e30 condensor fan wiring and fan itself, it cools it off just fine)

You will also have fun with the coolant system. Do you plan on using heat? if not, it will be much simpler and less complicated. If you do, youw ill need an E32 or E34 upper radiator hose which has a t-hose going to the heater core.

You will have more questions as the project goes on. I guarantee it. Go to www.jaredsquires.com He has a nice writeup about it. It's "no decal performance"

    GOOD LUCK!

      Thanks for reply

      DRIVESHAFT
I was planning on using the front part of the E34 drive shaft with the rear part of the original E30 driveshaft.
      As suggested on http://www.jaredsquires.com/ndp/335i/m30/page10.html

QUOTE:"In brief here is my solution for a 1990 E30 325i and a 1990 E34 535i combination. Take the front part of the 535i driveshaft and place it on the back part of the E30 driveshaft. Make sure you install a new E30 center bearing."

      ECU - WIRING LOOM
The Engine and ECU are from a MANUAL transmission 1990 E34 535i.

      So can you clarify:
Can I just lengthen the existing wiring loom?

For the driveshaft, I think you'll be fine doing what Jared did. It's like a math problem, there are many different ways to get to the same solution. If you had already acquired what jared says is needed for the driveshaft, I say go with it. www.e30.de is very misleading for it's directions, so take it with a grain of salt.

I used an E30 driveshaft and it worked. That method will work just fine as well.

        ECU - wiring loom

Keep the wiring loom from your engine and simply plug in the c101 port, add your ground engine wire, and ground the wires to the passenger strut housing
You shouldn't lengthen the wire loom if you are using the existing e34 wiring harness.

          thanks again

          E34 ECU + E30 WIRING LOOM
Can I keep the E30 loom and just lengthen it?
I dont want to change the loom if I dont have to!!

I used the E30 wiring loom for my m30 E34 swap, so yes.

              to mrk

              QUESTION TO MRK

              Which ECU did you use?
Did you have to extend some of the wires in the loom?
Does everything else work as normal?

You must try it and see what you are dealing with. It's very possible and quite easy, so these questions you have will all be answered as you go thru your swap.

Use your E34 ECU. I can guarantee that MRK did the same

Just making sure I buy all the bits I need before I start to do it the best way possible.

I have done a swap before on a Mazda MX3 and I learned that preperation is the key to success.

And you guys who have learned the hard way are the experts.

So if you say that the wiring loom from my E30 325i will work fine with an E34 535i ECU and all I have to do is extend a few wires then thats spot on.

PM Axxe, he is planning on making copies of the engine mounts, he may be able to make you a set for a hell of a lot more reasonable price.

You'll need lots of odds and ends. Air filter, new fuel hose(you'll need the length I think, and it's a good time to do it) - Downpipes, electric fan, ect...
