Ok, I got the engine started today. It has 230k on it and has a slight skip when you rev it. It started right up and ran fine besides for the skip. I think that its just from a combination of sitting for a few months, bad plugs and old gas. The price he gave me is for the engine and all the accessories. It was $50 extra if I want the computer. Does this sound like a good deal? The engine has more miles than mine by 10k but it has less leaks and is a lot cleaner. Should I get the computer with it? I need to know by Wednesday. Thanks.

You will need the comp for your swap whether it is this one or another. I haven't checked prices yet but I can't imagine a m30 comp being much cheaper if it has to be shipped and shit. The engine is really your call. I think the m30b35 is supposed to make somewhere ~15 hp more than the m30b34 but that is when they were brand new. I also don't know how easy it will be for you to sell your m30b34 without a 5spd tranny. I don't think the engines are that sought after since they are usually really strong. This only matters of course if you are strapped for cash. If you have the cash lying around than the b35 is the most sought after for the m30 swap. So again your call. Another thing to think about is if you don't need emissions you can run no/ high flow cat and that is supposd to release some extra hp from the b34 and get it closer to the b35.

If you are relying on cleanliness/ leaks to make your descision at the very least before you swap the engine you should change the major gaskets/ clean the engine up before installing it.

edit: Jesus sorry for the ridiculously long reply

I don't exactly have cash lying around, but I am not in desperate need of it either. I think that I will buy the b35 without the computer. Then I'll take the b34 out and clean it up and do a minor rebuild and try to sell it to the e28 crowd.
I was only judging the engine by leaks and cleanliness because it shows how it was cared for in its previous life. I would think that even with more miles, an automatic 7 series will have been driven easier than a standard 5 series owned by a college kid.
I'm not sure, but I think that the b34s are rated at 180 and the b35s are 215. HP doesn't matter that much to me because anything is better than an eta, but if I can have the greater hp for the same price, why not? The emissions places around here are all corrupt, $50 extra and my car passes, so no big deal about that.
        Thanks for the replies.

the 7 being an auto is definetly a plus for sure plus 7's are usually owned for the most part by rich old people so that is a plus as well. If I was in the same oppourtunity I would most likely also pick it up. You should definetly try and get him to throw in the comp when you are there removing the m30. I am sure he will at least reduce the price.

The $300 includes him removing the engine. He wont budge on the price, I tried.

Will the auto computer still work with my stick? I thought I read somewhere that it wouldn't.

I believe you are going to need the 5-speed computer...I got the e32 m30 and it was also automatic, but did not take the comp. Take that thing and go!

Ok, so I got the engine. Is the comp. from the e28 the same as a e34s would be?
