    What the hell?

My car club had a dyno day today and I ran the m30. The car survived but only put down 179hp. Im kinda disappointed. The dyno chart really freaked me out though.

Can anyone decipher what the hell is going on?

    specs:
    1990 b35
    Jim conforti chip
    173 ecu

    335i Dyno Run

How much were you shooting for? B35 stock is what 208 at the flywheel? So minus 15% is about what your car put down. Maybe try 179 ecu ?

but look at that torque curve! Above 160 for 3K RPM!

i was hoping for a tad bit more since the conforti chip claims something like 40hp. i know can get a few more if i fix the lean problem and give it a proper tune up.

the waviness in the chart is whats confusing.

no doubt that the car is a blast to drive though.

Waviness is ignition related I think. How are your plugs/wires/coil?

Also, what type of dyno were you on?

dynojet right? its in the vid. and yes the wires and coil could be replaced.

Ah, didn't notice the vid. Wires and coil should fix the waviness, but I would try to find your lean problem more importantly. Try doing a full tune up, those numbers should be higher.

They claim 40hp but that's at about 6250rpm! It's NOT a 40hp gain at the peak, and the M30s generally fall off sharply after 5800rpm, hence the large number that they advertise.

                    i see.

either way it looks like a need to freshen up the ignition bits. and yes ill switch to the 179ecu. almost every swap thread made it seem prefectly fine to keep the 173. ill keep you guys posted after the tune up.

                    thanks again.

Out of curiosity... does it FEEL fast? The M30 isn't about peak power, it's about the huge torque curve and that's where the fun is. For what it's worth, don't worry about the numbers it puts down if it feels good.

it looks lean - you are at 16:1 in the low end and and it only gets as rich as 14:1 above 5500rpm. Could be a fuel issue, or it could be that your TPS isn't sending the WOT signal to the ECU.

the car feels great even with only 178hp. the car is down to about 2600lbs. the thing loses traction in third gear on the highway believe it or not.

kinda scares me to think what it may feel like with more power.

i look into the TPS. thanks.

In Naturally Aspirated engines powered by octane, maximum power is frequently reached at AFRs ranging from 12.5 - 13.3:1

yeah, about 12.8:1 at peak torque and 13:1 everywhere else is a good target.

I think you'd pick up 10whp with a better fuel curve.
