    Using m42 transmission on m44?

It’s quite the interesting build here and I’ve been trying to get the right drive ratio for this, I’ve got a m44b19 running its normal transmission and a 4:10 diff, now the revs are still high after replacing the 4:27 diff beforehand, but I know the m42 has an overdriven last gear, and the 4:10 is made for the m42 drive and train.

So my question is, will the m42 transmission fit on the m44 engine?
I’m also looking to replace the short shifter with one that isn’t rock solid hard to shift if anyone has any recommendations.

    Thanks.

The revs will always be high with a 4.27 or 4.1. The overdrive in a G240 versus a G250 1:1 won't really matter in reality, at speeds greater than ~110 km/h it will still be up there. Besides, it is vastly easier to get a lower differential ratio in place, like a 3.73, than change a transmission.

Yes, a G240 can go on an M44, but you may need to change the pilot bearing.

Just use a stock shifter, it's not a race car after all.

The M20, M42, M44 and M5x all share a bellhousing pattern, so off you go.

      FWIW, the M42 in the E36 also got a G220 with a 1:1 5th.

The E36 318ti got a 3.45 diff in the manual version, and it bolts right in- drops your
revs to sub- 3k at A-road speeds...

Having driven an M42 car with a 3.15, it was fine, and having had an M42 car for years with a 4.44, it was also fine.

Basically, who cares, rev it out, or don't, it's not going to hurt it either way. If fuel cost is a factor, get an M40 or a motorcycle.
