    m42 wont start :(

I was driving it and turned it off and now it wont start.

It'll pop start just fine. When I turn the key it will click once, but that is it. I tried to read up, but I don't really know what to search for.

    Thank you.

Wont Jump start, I tried banging on the starter a little bit today, it tried a little bit the first time I turned the key and that was it.

Check the engine ground, and make sure the ground (and power) terminals on the battery are good. The starter gets power from a distribution block, follow the cable from the starter to that block and make sure that it's tight as well.

The terminals on the starter are clean and tight?

Pull the starter and bench test it. Also make sure your grounds are tight/clean. Test the battery voltage too.

It's possible the CPS (crank positioning sensor) took a shit...as that is the very symptom of such a failure. CPS failure is very common on the M42's, especially if it's the original part and has high miles. If it was the CPS, when you try to extract codes from the DME, you won't get a CPS failure code... For some reason w/ the M42's, when a CPS dies the DME will not spit out a failure code for such a problem.

The DME needs the CPS to be 100% functional in order to continue w/ firing off the fuel pump & spark - malfunctioning CPS or total failure of one = no fuel + no spark = no start.

go to m42club, there is a huge thread w/ tons of test/tech for diagnosing a non-start issue on an M42.

One other thing you can also check - turn the key to on, with hood open, see if you can hear or feel your ICV buzzing... when the key is on, a functional ICV will have a slight buzzing noise coming from it and if you hold it, you can feel the buzzing too... an ICV that is not buzzing is dead, which can sometimes create hard starts, no starts and/or idle/drivablity issues. You can remove it and try cleaning it out w/ carb cleaner - then tapping on the exterior casing to see if it comes back to life. A dead ICV will trip a DME code.

I can't get my starter out.

I've read three different tutorials that say three different things, I've tried all the shit it said and the fucking thing isn't budging. All say that there are a top and bottom bolt. There are two bolts on the right side of the starter. One is missing, was never there I guess. The other one that is towards the top I removed. There seems to be a third bold on the other side of the starter, but I can't get anything to turn it to even find out what happens if I could take it off. Nothing is moving at all as of now. I don't know what to do, if I pay someone to pull it and then it's not even the starter I'll just have wasted, idk, 300 bucks? FML

Here are some pics I took, hard to actually get any, but maybe you can use em to referance me spots.

                        Thanks to anyone who replies

                        Starter from far back

Where the bold I can't remove is

                        Starter from underneath

My camera's too big to fit underneath there.

There should be two large bolts holding the starter to the engine block, accessible from the transmission bell housing, while underneath the car and using a mega long set of extensions. They should be external torx bolts. On the other side of the bolts should be two hard-to-access nuts sandwiching the transmission bellhousing, the engine block, and the starter all together. I forgot, but if you can move the heater core hoses out of the way, you should be able to see these bolts.

There is also a sheetmetal bracket holding the starter to the side of the engine block. There should be a 17 mm head bolt holding the bracket to the block.

Check the hot wire (copper braided) from the starter solenoid to the actual starter. They rot away so the solenoid will click but no power to the actual starter motor. That would explain popping the clutch and it starting but won't take a jump.
