just replaced my m42. issues! can anybody lend me some advice?

So i just replaced my m42, with another m42. got everything bolted in and what not, but there are some wierd things that happen when i turn the key.

it kind of sounds...and feels like the spark plug wires have been mixed up, but there might be a bigger issue.

she fires and starts up, but backfires and fires herself out of rotation quite suddenly and dies. she runs really rough for about a second and then dies.

    any ideas?

    thanks!!

Either the timing of the cams is off or your spark plug wires are out of order.

If it was backfiring that much and stuttering, I'm guessing you'll need to pull your head and check the valves.

If you're missing the chain tensioner and it was running like that and dying, your valves are toasted. You're past the point of needing a tensioner.

pull the head and inspect itbefore you crank it again.

maybe between the 2 you can build a good one, if you still have the other motor

yeah so i got the tensioner,,,she runs, wayyy better than she did before. idle is rough...but still pretty rocky. i was messing around with the spark plugs and pulled plugs 3&4 out just to see what would happen...nothing changed...so apparently its not firing on cylinder 3&4? what the hell does this mean?? could it be as simple as the spark plugs are shot?

                          Or your valves are bent...

                          Do a compression test

Your valves are bent. No seal = no compression.
