If you're missing the chain tensioner and it was running like that and dying, your valves are toasted. You're past the point of needing a tensioner. -

well. i figured it out. the missing part is: hydraulic timing chain tensioner. how bad is that!?!?Leave a comment:

just replaced my m42. issues! can anybody lend me some advice?
So i just replaced my m42, with another m42. got everything bolted in and what not, but there are some wierd things that happen when i turn the key.
it kind of sounds...and feels like the spark plug wires have been mixed up, but there might be a bigger issue.
she fires and starts up, but backfires and fires herself out of rotation quite suddenly and dies. she runs really rough for about a second and then dies.
any ideas?
