Morning start up issue

my timing chain tenioner maybe has 10k on it, if that much.

i haven't done my guides, so that could be the culprit.?

i say you try the guides i was told that those fail or break over time
im about to change the oil see if that works

did chaging your oil reduce the noise??
did you change the piston? i was told that it breaks and its a common thing in m42 engines

i haven't touched my timing system other than the tensioner piston. i dont think its a timing issue because it runs perfect when warm.

the oil reduced it, but it still does it if it gets down really cold.

and im now thinking its the ignitions wires, im not sure...

Oil pressure control valve in the front timing cover?

A terrible rattle from the timing chain cover, that started out small and progressively got worse.

Basically when that valve fails, it doesn't have sufficient oil pressure at idle to keep the chain tensioner happy. So the chain slaps around.

mine doesn't sound like a loose chain, more of a loud ticking. im still thinking either coils, ignition wires, or something is wrong with the self adjustment in the valves or something to deal with that. it only does it when its cold, so that lead me to that thought...

I'd try running a quart of ATF with some 5w30 and see if that queits it down. The ticking is most likely your lifters.

No, but it's really thin so don't use more than a quart. The detergents in it can usually clean out gunked up lifters. Run it for several hundred miles.

Your gears should be replaced. Cams look fine. Can't see the lifters, but you can't really visually inspect them anyway.

How long have you been running the ATF in there? Still no change?

Try going down to 10w30.

Just trying to cover all bases, but you know it's a 5.3 quart engine, right? Sorry, had to ask.

yea, it slounds like a diesel now sometimes at start up but goes away, and im pretty sure its the cam gears. i've heard way worse noise from a m42 though.

as for the atf, i ran it for a week, drained it out today, nothing really changed. doesnt tick as loud anymore. im 99% positive that the noise is from a lifter thats not being primed at start up.

but on a side note,

how much longer do you think that the m42 will last as it look right now? im trying to save up for either a timing re-build or a m50 swap. which ever is cheaper.

also, does anyone have all the part numbers for a timing rebuild? or a estimated cost? or a place to get all the parts from the cheapest?

If the ATF didn't improve it after a week, I'm betting one of your lifters is toasted.

im pretty sure its just a lifter thas not getting primed well at low temp start ups.

the only thing wrong with it is the timing is getting a little worn out.
