I've heard you can put just about any getrag trans behind the m42. Anybody know if this is true, how about a ZF. And if so, what will fit and what do we need to make it work? I'm in the process of building my stroker and would like to bolt it up to something stronger then the 240.

E36 ZF and Getrag transmission will fit, but note that they don't have an overdriven 5th gear so you will need a longer diff ratio. E46 6-speeds will fit with different mounts, a shortened driveshaft, and some banging on the trans tunnel. I'm not entirely sure how the linkage would work though. the euro e36 M3 transmission will fit as well (the 6 speed one) with similar modifications. The 260 will also fit, but it will be a little bit of an angle. I'm not sure how much other work is involved.
240's are reasonably strong and are a bit lighter than the 260 (not sure by how much; this is just from me picking one and then the other up) but the synchos are very weak. I double-clutch all of my downshifts now because my last trans was so bad, and the last thing I want to do is another trans swap. I also had one that somehow pressurized itself during a track day and sprayed 1.5 quarts of fluid out of the vent before I realized it. Needless to say, that transmission was toast.Comment
