    Head Gasket Replacement

So I'm going to be replacing the head gasket on my old m42 and I was wondering which gasket to purchase.

    Realoem lists two:

    1.74mm
    2.04mm

I'm not sure if you're supposed to use the slightly thicker version since its being removed for the first time.

    Can anyone provide any insight?

Just wondering why are you only replacing head gasket? It's a lot of work to take out the head!

I just did a head rebuild and used the head gasket kit from pelican. It's like $104. It brought all of the gaskets that I needed.

You might not need the entire kit, since you are not doing a rebuilt. But if you are going to go through all that work of taking the head out you might seriously want to consider a rebuild. Not sure how many miles your engine has.

If you don't do rebuild and just replace the head gasket you will need to order new head bolts too. You can't reuse the old ones.

Hey, actually decided to pick up another motor. The cost involved to replace the head gasket was pushing the 500 mark.

I wasn't just going to replace the head gasket, I was going to be replacing any gaskets and bolts in the process :D But thats just not going to work because this is just for a winter car.

well it depends. machined heads will require a larger gasket but if this is the first time it has been replaced just get the oem gasket.

so the 1.74mm will do fine

I am currently in the process and bought the pelican parts kit to do a full reconditioning. I havn't bough a thicker head gasket and would like to know if I need to?

The width of the head was 141mm which is 1mm bigger then the referance size, and they say that if the head is less then 140mm then you need a thicker head gasket is this right?

Oh and if you haven't pulled the head off before be prepared for all kinds of suprises, one of my exhorset valve seals had been cut back way to much. Which made the valve sit deep in the port, consiquently the idiot who did this shaved the top of the valve steam off so it all fit, what a retard!

this is the gasket i used on my M42, quite a few people said that this was the good gasket to go with, guess i lucked out...

i think i got it from FCP groton. It's an OEM gasket. this was the first time the motor had received a new head gasket.
