You think I have thousands of dollars? I'm a do it myself type of person. I know I don't know everything, but I do have resources and know a bmw shop who is helping me with lots of stuff. The guys are real nice and are glad to help me out.sigpic

Ha. well thanks. And i'm probably pulling the motor out myself, but may be having the shop do the rebuild for me. Or most of it.sigpic

You can do it yourself but you're going to be spending a lot of time and money on it. Don't expect this to be some 500 dollar engine refresh. BEST case scenario has you spending that. Worst case is a total rebuild. If you need to do it fast and cheap, find a used M42 and swap it right in. Then you can rebuild the M42 that's busted while you have a running car.

Very true. I've actually been on the hunt for an m42. Thanks for the advice by the way.sigpic

While you have the oil pan forcefully off though, you can take off the upper pan and take a look at the connecting rod caps. Disconnect those and you can see if you spun a bearing from oil starvation. Just look for marks in the surface of the rod bearing (both on the cap and on the crank.) Tell us what you find.
