    M20 Clutch

I have a complete 325is doner car with a new clutch installed in it and was wondering what it takes to use this in my M42 318is, If even possible. I searched but couldnt find anything definitive. Sorry if this is a stupid question..

You could put it to use if you performed the m20 single mass flywheel conversion. Here's an interesting thread on the topic:

You don't need to modify the M42 starter, just use the M20 starter from your donor. The mod was just a way to reduce costs vs buying an M20 starter. Basically all you need that's not on your donor is the 323 throw out bearing and shorter flywheel bolts but neither of these are very much $. I'm so glad I did this to mine.

        m20 'clutch' conversion for m42

Where do I find these "shorter bolts"!? Or is it the same bolts modified.

So much conflicting information. Please someone who has actually done this mod fill me in. I've been putting it off for 3 years. No time/money and I couldn't register for the m42club forum because they don't accept yahoo/hotmail accounts. When I finish this I'll post pictures..

Is this a correct path for the conversion:
        -1990 325i Clutch & Pressure Plate
        -1990 325i Flywheel
        -1990 325i Flywheel bolts P/N# 11-22-7-805-885
        -1983 323i Throw-out bearing P/N # 21-51-1-204-525
-swap spacer (taken from dual-mass m42 flywheel)
-swap pinion/ring gear from 325i starter/flywheel or entire 325i starter

*1990 to make sure it's the late model m20, as i'm not too familiar with 325s

        Can I use 1983 323i flywheel in this ^ equation? :-?

I'm pretty sure the 325 flywheel bolts are the correct length. You should be good to go with what you have posted.

Yes, you can use the early E30 323i flywheel (I did this - I love it)
Yes, use the 325i flywheel bolts as the "shorter" bolts (28mm long)

Hey guys where does the spacer go!? The m42 spacer which I take off (by drilling the welds) and use in the m20 conversion..

I did this swap two weekends ago with a friend.

The large m20 starter we had didn't fit, so we took the gear off the end and put it on the m42 starter.

The flywheel hit the rear main oil seal housing, shaved it down with an angle grinder.

Spacer goes between the flywheel and the crankshaft.

                      Help!

The 325i m20 flywheel I got was too thick. Apparently you have to shave down that version 6mm + use the thin spacer from the m42 dual-mass flywheel to make it work. (see the pictures) I got my thin m20 flywheel from a convertible (325ic), the one that turned out to be too thick was from a 325is. I'm not sure what flywheels regular 325i's came with, seems to vary a lot. Make sure you got one that works before you start this job! An e21 323i flywheel also works with the 87-91 325i m20 clutch kit (doesn't have that thickness on the side facing the engine so it doesn't hit, and it's also about 4 pounds lighter). I think e21 "320/6" models also have thin 228mm flywheels which don't need to be shaved down. e21 320i, 2002tii and some early model 2002's also have some that might work but they are smaller than 228mm and a m20 clutch kit won't fit since they are for an m10, and i'm not sure what starter you'd need. however that flywheel is ridiculously light! same as aluminum.

                      89 325is

                      e21 320i

m20 clutch (too thick) BEFORE modification

                      m20 clutch (too thick) AFTER
