why is my m42 still over heating?

so ive replaced the thermostat, then notice the stat housing had a crack in it so replaced that( did not drive it with cracked housing), filled and bleed the cooling system, even jacked up the front the second time i bled it,
filled up the tank till no bubbles came out of the bleeder screw. started the car ran it for about 45 min to an hour never even hit the middle on gauge ( only went to the 1/4 mark), no steam on anything drove it round the block and it went to the half way mark and slowly started creeping up to 3/4's.

my only thoughts are possibly tank cap?
im really getting frustrated now and could use the help guys would like to drive my car some day soon

Sounds like head gasket problems.... more cylinder pressures than idle when you are driving...

have you measured the temperature any other way other than the stock gauge..? might be the gauge.

no i have not only have the gauge to go by but it seems to be working,
the big issue is the heat is not work when it was before i did the stat and housing
i had similar problems with my 328 2 years ago

Try tightening the gauge ground. It may be loose and be giving a false reading. Mine did

try using a laser temp gauge thing and check the actually temp.

Good luck man. It can only be 1 of a few things. Check out my "how hot does your car run" thread a few down in the m42 section.

People give pretty much every solution to fixing an overheating m42.

i just really feel that the lack of heat is related to the over heating i no its getting hot i saw a bit of steam coming from the cap but hard to tell if it was old or not

A couple years ago I bought a 318is; it needed a waterpump - was leaking. I changed it and had the exact same problem. You may have to drive it around and let it creep up then turn the motor off; let the pressure move the air to the top of the system and open the bleeder screw. See if steam or air comes out. I know you bled it a few times etc. but trust me; I strongly believe you still have air. I literally had the car run on the highway and my temp began go high. I shut it off and on the road bled it. I did this a few times until the temp stabilized. Good chance the reason you got NO HEAT in the cabin is because you still have air trapped in the system. remember to put the heat on defrost and full while you are running the car.
You may also have to create pressure in the system buy getting the engine's rev's up to force air out while bleeding. that's all folks!!!

oh keep a jug of coolant handy 50/50 mix.

i really feel that once the heat works itll be fine

Sounds dumb but did you turn your heater on when you refilled the car? If you drain the fluid and don't put the heater on when you refill it, your gauge will be all crazy and your heater wont work I did it by accident once.

i bled the system again this morning still no heat
im thinking the stat i bought is defective as was the belt i bought from the same napa.....
this POS also has wiring problem like no ones business wiring is just all over the place check the cluster could the damn thing completely out but dont suspect faulty ground because THE GOD DAMN HEAT IS NOT WORKING so im really pissed off and am getting to be f**king broke,\

any input any at all why my heat is not working it is not leaking coolant and can sit at idle for over 2 hours with out going past the 1/4 mark drive it around the block and it heats right up and then some
