    Flywheel Question

Beginning to hate the dual mass flywheel on my 91 318is
From what I understand this flywheel should bolt up to the motor but I am unclear what starter/clutch/and throwout bearing I would need.
    Any help is appreciated.

you have to swap to m20 starter, or starter gears. maybe someone can chime in and confirm this.

that's what I was suspecting, I guess it would basically be the same parts as using a m20 flywheel. So m20 starter and a 6 cyl clutch and pressure plate + corresponding throwout bearing.

        ^^^
You are correct except that you need:
        323i Throw Out Bearing P/N 21-51-1-204-525
        M20 Flywheel Bolts P/N 11-22-7-805-885
You also have to remove the thin spacer ring that is riveted to your dual mass and put in on your new flywheel - you don't need to re-rivet it. Search in the M42Club site for more info.

Be aware that the Ebay part you referenced is not an M20 flywheel.

Yea its an m5x/s5x flywheel but I think it should still work, the m42 block is basically the same as a m50nv. Thanks for the PN's should be able to make it work when I feel like taking things apart. For that price it cant hurt to try coming from the vw world im kind of shocked at how much bmw flywheels cost

I'm not so sure...the M42 flywheel is 215 mm dia and the M50 is 228. If nothing else the starter probably won't line up - starter ring on flywheel too big. Besides you can get the M20 flywheel of a lot less than $250 (they're usually around $100-$150) and they weigh less than 14.5 lbs.
