because this is valve covers i have a question. For those that have m42 and have looked at the underside of the cover there is one plate of metal riveted into the valve cover.

The other is plastic and can be removed. My question is this. is it necessary for the metal riveted splash guard to be there? Does it control flow of oil onto cams? thats the only thing I can think of it doing.

Works the same way as the cover does on the m5x motors, it helps the oil "splash" onto the cam for proper lubrication, without the oil would fling over the cam and back down into the galley to the oil pan.
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

I don't know the owners, although I talked to one of them a little. If I remember correctly I think he said they sent it somewhere to have it polished.

He and the other owner are apparently car hobbyists that collaborate. He said dollar for dollar the 318is S/C was the most fun and best performing project they'd done to date.
