    M42 Crank bolt removal

Anyone have any ideas to help me get my crank bolt off? The motor is out of the car and I've tried using my impact gun and wedging a screw driver in the ring gear and using a breaker bar. I really don't want to have to put the motor and tranny back in just to bust the bolt free but I will if I have to. Thanks in advance

I used some vice-grips on the pulley or on the fly wheel and never had a problem.. GL

If your gun is big enough you shouldn't have to hold the pulley still.

He's already using a breaker bar, and big guns are cool.

Ohdont get me wrong I know what you are saying but he is saying the engine is out and he can't get it out with the beaker bar and its thinking of putting the engine back in because of that.. so maybe its because when he is using the beaker bar the pulley is turning.... maybe??

Do you have a dead blow hammer - or maybe a small sledge?

Get set with one hand on the breaker bar - right on the socket - to keep it held firmly onto the crank bolt.

With the other hand - begin taking slow, deliberate strikes on the breaker bar.
                Practice up slow.
                (re)position beaker bar as desired.
As you start getting a good feel for things - increase force of strikes on the breaker bar.
A dead blow would be preferable to a small sledge.

I've had good luck with this method.

Exactly! Haha I can't find anywhere that rents electric impact guns but haven't tried that hard yet. I'm going to go try to vice grip idea, how did you have the grip to keep it from turning? Just wedge it up against the floor?

The motor was on the car when I removed it but yeah just rest it on the floor.

lol getting it off is the easy part try re-torquing it to recommended specifications. That is when the fun begins.

Copy. I assumed you meant you had access to an air compressor. Compressed air and a 3/4" drive impact gun are your friends in this situation.
