    1991 318is diff fluid

    Is this the correct diff fluid to use?
    Mobil/1 qt. 75W-90 synthetic gear oil



    Also when putting back rear diff cover do I use alittle bit of rvt on paper gasket or just paper gasket??

    Why are you taking the diff cover off? RTV will work if you let it cure.

    It's a little more than a quart I think. Make sure it has an LSD additive if your diff is an LSD.

      It will take a little more than a qt.

        ^ what he said. I used redline also while you're down there change your tranny fluid. Redline mtl is a great oil to use!!!

          pulling diff cover off to replace bushing with akg poly. Guess i put some honda bond on the paper gasket to make sure it seal.

            I've replaced the diff mount bushing with the cover still on so I wouldn't take the cover off unless it was leaking and neede a reseal.

            RTV as stated works fine. Honda bond is the same material more or less.

              I thought the small case LSD's were a little under a quart?

                How you manage to remove diff bushing without pulling rear cover off?? Also I like honda bond over rtv because is easy to clean up.

                  HondaBond is the shit! Been using it for years. You can also use YamaBond but I'm partial to Hondas.

                    Mine was. Just under a quart it started coming out the fill plug. And OP, I used Mobile1 75w-90LS for the LSD.

                        you can use a hacksaw blade to cut the outer ring of the old bushing then it will pop out easily, I did it on the workbench.
                        I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.

                          torch if you really have to, but I wouldn't really want to do that with it still near the car.


                          I'm using LS 75W-140 from mobil 1. it's a bit noisy when going around turns on the street or when cold, but the lockup is solid and because of the autox I opted for a heavier weight. I'm satisfied with it, but I wouldn't recommend it for a daily or primarily street car.

                            then what you recommend for daily?? im still gonna pull rear casing off to put on new seal and press bushing out.

                              a lighter fluid... the 75W-90 should be fine, but if the diff chatters and is annoying you might want to put in a little friction modifier.
