Found a free M44. What to do with it?

I might be able to pick up an 89 000km M44 with a blown head gasket for free. I don't have a lot of faith in how it was treated to have poped the gasket in 89k, but it is free. I can also pick up an M42 from an E30 that needs head and profile gaskets replaced for a good price.

I've been looking for something to replace the M40 in the touring and this might be the perfect sign to keep it 4cylinder.

My question is, what would you guys do in my situation? I don't care for the M40 at all and the trans needs a TOB anyway.

But doesn't that give a low compression ratio? The extra .2l over the M42 and .01l over the M44 couldn't be worth a lower cr.

I'm not thinking about a full out built motor, this is my year round car, just want something that will give decent mileage and better power than the M40.

So I think the plan is M44 longblock with M42 manifolds and wiring mated to my M40 trans.

                He has a M40 guys.

It would be a good improvement over your M40 both in HP and TQ. I would just swap it in if you were looking for something better than stock but just wanted to keep it simple. The Mileage should be good as ever or better.

The m44's rods and crank are cast, the m42's are forged. I'd fix/sell the m44 and rebuild the m42 w/ 11.5:1 Metric Mechanic pistons and 272/258 cams.

From what I've been seeing the m44 crank along with s50 pistons doesn't lose compression, Comes out to rougly 2 liters, now what you really want is M47 crank with s50 pistons, 2.1 liters and with the right fuel management, can put you over 200hp.

I'm not building anything for this car. I just want a basic swap for my daily. No 'because racecar' 4 cylinder builds, just something peppier and revv-ier than the shitty M40.

Just looking for info on the E30 M44 swap and if its not fairly basic, what I could do with the engine. Its a daily driver that I'm fine with if its slow, I just want a better engine than the M40.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter anyway now as they haven't gotten back to me about the motor so I'm betting its gone.
