what would be the reason to swap?

it should be simple enough, but you would need to change the oilpan, ECU, and maybe a few odds and ends.

in the long run the only advantage i can see is that you get knock sensors, so forced induction is easier.

the M44 i believe has cast internals where the M42 has forged, so that would be the downgrade.

Interested also for the e36. I have worked on both and can tell you the valve-train is def not the same as the cam locking tool doesn't fit on the M42 head without being separated but fits all 6 cyl and M44 cams as one piece. So the cams on the M42 are farther apart from each other and I think that's why the chain set up is different. I ss the only issue needing a place to put the sending unit for the temp gauge since the M44 uses a dual sender, but then again it has the wire you should be able to splice it....

Reasoning is to have a replacement 4 cyl option other than a tired old M44. I have a swap car E30 already this car will remain a auto 4 banger as long as gas in over $2 a gallon.
