Rebuilding M42- what to do "while I'm in there"

I'm doing an M40-M42 swap in my touring as soon as I get time to pull the engine from donor car and rebuild it. Getting it dirt cheap (basically free) but it needs a head gasket, profile gasket, but it was running when the car was parked.

I've already bought a head gasket, head bolts, valve cover gasket, spark plug seals plus a bunch of random other little things like that which I found being sold for cheap.

The scope of this rebuild is just gaskets, hoses, water pump and thermostat. Unless I find something catastrophic I don't plan to touch the bottom end bearings or rings. Should I be concerned about the timing gears? I've heard lots about older, high mileage sprockets getting "rounded" and needing to be replaced? What about the chain guides and tensioners? The only performance modifications I plan are a chip and a some kind of header to clear my right hand drive steering shaft if I can't find a reasonably priced stock piece from overseas.
For all things 24v, check out Markert Motorworks!

i'd say the guides especially the one on the right (when standing in front looking at the car) are the most important parts to be changed, plus the tensioner.

Round/Square cam gear sprockets are good. You don't want pointy gears.

      Good

      Bad

Super jealous of the touring too. Nice!
