    M42 questions (going into a 2002)

I'm gonna start this a bit different; with the cliffs up top ;)

    Cliffs:

    1. Swapping higher mileage m42 into a 2002 destined for track use/weekend fun.
    2. How in depth should I go in my "rebuild/refresh" of the motor?
    3. Is 145-160whp a reasonable amount of power to expect from these motors: chip, intake, exhaust, etc..

    - I am not a noob per say, but I like to hear input from those that have tread the waters I have not.. And trust me, I am searching, just as I did when I first bought this car 3 years ago and wanted to build it up. This is a refresher thread for me, as its been a while since I really read into the e30 game :(

Ok guys, here's the le deal, last year my brother rolled my 318is:

I then sold the delphin and bought my wrx:

    ----------------------------------------------
Now I've spent the last 4 months searching for a relatively clean 2002 to start another BMW project with. Well, I finally found a promising candidate; a 1976 2002 for $600obo. It's almost completely disassembled, no motor/trans/seats/carpet, but the glass and all body panels etc are still there.

    * I can store this car in my brother's storage unit for free, for as long as I need *

I plan to swap my m42 into the 2002, and turn this into a weekend toy that will see some days at Road America. I already have ideas as for my suspension (IE stage 2 springs, bilstein sports, IE sways), wheels and body work will be kept simple, I want something around 16x8, flares probably, etc..

Anywho, back to the purpose of the thread: Is 145-160whp a reasonable amount of power to expect from an m42 w/o going the FI route? I've become very familiar with boost messing around with my stage 2 wrx, and I'm almost positive I want to keep this NA.

The motor has 198k miles on it. I'm going to be replacing the cooling system, probably the chain/tensioner if needed, water pump, thermostat, new aluminum radiator, COP kit, etc.. I'm also thinking that the engine bearings/piston rings possibly? It never leaked or burnt oil, so idk if that's really necessary?
    - Keep in mind, I plan on using the motor for fun/track duties, so RPMs above 6k will likely be utilized often.
    - I know it wont need much power, I'm not unrealistic. A sub 2000lb car does NOT need much power to be fun. The whole point of this car is to be fun, and I do not need 200whp to have fun on a track. I'd rather have a tight suspension and sticky tires than a stupid quick motor in a tiny old car that'll probably flex like a mofo.

You could probably expect those. Numbers at the crank, but not wheels.

      ^^ that'd kinda what I was figuring :/

I have no set goals for motor output, not even going to really think that far ahead yet. I'm more concerned with it being reliable for how I wanna use it.

        this all day long.

you might see in the 150ish hp range but youd have to spend a pretty large chunk of change just to get there.

Car will be under 2k with the m42? The Challenge 2002 was 2060 wet/stripped with Lexan, gutted doors to the skin, full hood, turbo m20. It also has e30 suspension and subframes, though.

Do you have a budget? Hot cams to use higher RPM and a chip will be plenty for short tracks in a 2002.

yeah.... I was merely dreaming lol

I'm going to look at the 2002 again on Monday morning, I literally had 3 minutes to look at it before the guy got called into work. It looks really clean, very promising.

I'm just gonna focus on this thing being dead nuts reliable and fun. Sub 1900lbs, rwd, and almost 0 creature comforts :)

From what I read on BMW2002faq it is possible; remember, its gonna be damn near completely gutted on the inside. The m42 is significantly lighter than the m20 too I believe, and I wonder how much the turbo setup/m20 threw off the weight distribution?

Budget? Uh... not really, I can spend as long as I want doing this, most if not all the work will be done by myself. Around $5k would be my completely made up budget I have in mind lol

I'll also be retaining the 2002 suspension setup, and probably using this kit (w/race springs, same as my 325is) + bilstein sports http://www.iemotorsport.com/bmw/2002...springkit.html

m42=359lb m20=429lb turbo and manifold are about 80lb. Our car is completely gutted, Lexan windows (glass wind screen), glass flair fenders 15x10" wide-5 wheels with 275/35-15 A6 Hoosiers. Fiberglass racing seat, dash skin and harness bar is all that's inside the car. Gonna weigh more this season, adding a cage.

Ok, so 150lbs extra for your motor/turbo setup.

I'm probably gonna have the two seats (sparco reclineable r100s), front carpet, radio, couple speakers, and a functioning dash/heater.

I've also seen on m42club that a D/A supercharger only adds 17lbs of weight! Delete the AC and it'd still weigh less than stock, yet have about 50-60 extra whp.. Add that to the list of stuff I want lol

Another question.. If I have the complete m42 wiring harness, do I even need the 2002's harness and wiring, or can I "transplant" all the M42 wiring?

This was a track-only car so we just wired what was needed to the engine harness to make it run. Fuel pump, ignition fused/non-fused, tach, water temp, alternator B+ and a starter button. If you are keeping heater and the like, you will have more stuff to deal with.

I may decide to ditch that stuff too, I always have the wrx and long johns for when the weather gets nasty lol
